Because of chaos at home, many children in the foster care system were already performing below grade level when they entered foster care. After being pulled from their homes, and often forced to switch schools, these kids regress even further academically. Children in foster care are twice as likely as other youth to repeat a grade or be in a special education program. As a tutor, you can be matched with a foster or foster/adoptive child to help improve his/her reading skills or you could tutor children in foster care one-on-one at a residential treatment center.
Tutoring opportunities are available throughout the St. Louis area on weekdays, weeknights and weekends. Although the schedule for tutors varies by volunteer opportunity, volunteers generally tutor 2 hours every week. Volunteers must be 16 years or older, be willing to make a nine month volunteer commitment, and consent to a criminal and child abuse/neglect background check.
To become a Tutor, please contact Shelley Thomas-Benke, Director of FosterServe Volunteers.
