20-year-old “T” recently took placement of her younger sister with support from the Coalition. When Makayla, Family Connections Specialist, was initially brought on the case, she fought hard for the youth’s team to consider her older sister as a placement option. Makayla reflected, “There are always ways that people can be involved.”
As it turned out, all “T” needed to be able to take placement of her sister was a bed—which was quickly and generously provided by our agency partner, Foster Together. Just 48 hours after the Coalition came on the case, the youth was with her sister. Relative placement maintains family connections for youth impacted by foster care, leading to less trauma and increased placement stability.
The Coalition’s Families United team will provide ongoing support to the sisters, including helping “T” become a licensed foster care provider. Their story is proof that timely and diligent support can preserve the bonds that matter most: those of family.
