The Power of Kinship: Bryson’s Journey

More than 100 studies involving over 660,000 children show that youth placed with relatives or kin experience better health, educational, and mental health outcomes—something that proved especially true for 15-year-old Bryson, thanks to the amazing work at the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition.

Although Bryson initially resided with non-relatives, he entered foster care in March 2025 due to behavioral challenges the family could not manage alone. When 30 Days to Family® Specialist, Teara, received Bryson’s case there was no known information about his father. However, within a few days, her diligent family-finding efforts identified 113 relatives, including Bryson’s father.

When his father was contacted, Teara learned that he had not seen his son in 3 to 4 years. Though his father lacked stable housing, he was legally married, and thanks to the team’s swift work, Bryson was officially placed with his stepmother within days of entering care. With no one else pursuing relative or kinship options, Bryson’s placement was truly a victory that prevented him from being placed in a residential facility.

Since moving in with his stepmom, Bryson is thriving. He now attends high school regularly, enjoys home-cooked meals and quality time visits with his father, and has built a strong bond with his siblings he now lives with. Bryson’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a child is truly seen, supported, and surrounded by love. It’s a true reflection of our mission: For every child…A Place to Call Home.
