Ask the Advocate: Absenteeism
Regular school attendance is critical to student success, as it supports academic achievement, social development, and long-term outcomes. For students in foster care, consistent attendance is especially important because it provides stability and routine. It also allows educators to identify and address learning challenges that may be compounded by trauma and could otherwise hinder progress. Maintaining regular attendance helps prevent learning gaps and fosters supportive relationships that can reduce educational barriers.
